August 1987, Shepperton, England Jim Ballard in front of a reproduction of 'The Violation' originally by Paul Delvaux, but destroyed during the Second World War. This painting was propped up in front of the fire place in Mr Ballard's Shepperton semi where I photographed him. I'd always loved his work and wanted to try to bring some of the other-worldliness of it in to my portrait of him. At some point during the shoot the proverbial light bulb went on above my head and I thought to twist the camera around a central axis through the lens whilst on a slow shutter speed creating a blur at the edges but a still centre
